Wedding Garter Traditions & Significance
Monday, November 23, 2009
In the 14th century it was the custom for the bride to toss her garter to the male guests. This was changed to the bouquet toss because frequently the male guests got so drunk they would try to remove the garter ahead of time. American weddings have revived the garter toss for quite some time.
Garters are considered essential wedding accessories by brides today. Wearing something blue is often used in garters with a blue garter or a small blue bow on the garter. The color blue represents Constancy and Loyalty. Choosing garters that have not only the toss garter but also a keepsake garter for the groom are becoming the most popular choice with brides today.
